Update from the Mississippi Legislature

Friends,
this week, the Mississippi House of Representatives met in committees to consider bills that were passed over from the Senate. The deadline for House
committees to pass these bills is Tuesday, February 27. Committee work will continue through Tuesday.

Here are a few highlights from bills that passed this week:

  • HB 1549 expands freedom by allowing automobile manufacturers to get license plates for their cars that are leased to employees as part of an employee benefit
plan. This will be especially beneficial for employees of Nissan in Madison County.
  • HB 1359 decreases
the tax burden on individuals. It states that disaster assistance funds provided to farmers shall not be counted as income for tax purposes.
  • SB 2457 decreases the regulatory burden on agricultural businesses in the state. It changes a report filing requirement from quarterly to annually.

You might have noticed that the House has passed over a dozen bond bills so far this year. These bills borrow money at taxpayers’ expense for projects
around the state. My commitment to you when I was elected was to reduce the size of government. That includes voting against measures that increase
our state’s debt by millions of dollars and place a higher tax burden on our children in the future.

While some of these bonds might fund infrastructure projects, I’m convinced that funds exist within our current $6 Billion budget to fund important projects,
we simply need to make that a priority and redirect resources from other programs that fall outside the proper role of government.

As always, you can see every bill that the House voted on this week, along with how I voted and a short explanation of the bill, on my weekly vote post here.

There are a number of other general bills that passed out of House committees this week that are currently awaiting a vote before the House. You can see these bill on my House Calendar page here.

I’ll continue live streaming the action from the House on my Facebook page here.
